V2001 - Chelmsford 18/08/2001
An Open-Air concert staged in Chelmsford, which had a wide range of top
class acts spread over two days. You can camp out there over the weekend if you want,
but we decided to just go for the first day (Sev wanted to see Jimmy Barns and Kylie).
It took about 2 and a half hours to get to the venue from home, which wasn't to bad,
although the queue to get in to the park was huge and took ages as all the bags were
being checked as people went through. We managed to get to the main stage, just after
Jimmy Barns had started much to Sev's happiness. Although, I must say, he wasn't to bad,
well, for an Aussie anyway.
While watching Jimmy, we ran in to some old friends Tracey and Jason, I originally met them
while doing the OctoberFest in 1997 (Yes, I have been here that long), sort off lost touch
after a while, but are now re-united.
The Spooks played after Jimmy, then Nelly Furtado was on, followed by Embrace. I knew a few of
the songs played by all three, but had only really heard of Nelly Furtado.......Man, I must be getting old.
It was now time for a bit of a break, wander through the many stalls that were set up, do a bit
of shopping etc, before heading down to another stage to listen to Wheatus. Not to bad, I only really
know one of their songs, although, nearly all of them start the same way, so the crowd was always
chearing thinking the 'Teenage Dirt Bag' was coming on, but it wasn't. As soon as they did play it
though, almost everyone headed back to the main stage for Coldplay.
Coldplay had to be the best act for me on the day, even though the rain started to bucket down
on everyone there, it didn't dampen anyones spirits. The crowd continued to sing along, an awesome
atmosphere. Top songs played, along with a couple of new ones.
Finished the day off listening to Texas, Sev and Tracey wanted to see Kylie, but that had closed
the tent for any new people trying to get in, as there was over-crowding. Would have been nice
if they had mentioned that before we spent the hour waiting in line.
However, if we end up going back next year, we will probably do the camping thing and stay for
both days instead of just the one.
